Report on a Discussion Session for Undergraduates

It was a fascinating experience to be able to preside over a discussion session for a selective course called “Pharmacy, Life & Society”. 19 freshmen participated in the session. We started out a little bit awkwardly, partly because of my seemingly austere presence. (I was only a substitute for the designated teaching assistant.)
Fortunately the ice soon melted and the discussion went smoothly and occasionally got heated up. It was quite satisfactory to see that everyone in the session was nicely prepared, making it comfortable for me to manipulate the session progress. Gosh, monologuing in front of a bunch of freshmen or having to call it a day before the bell rings would undoubtedly seem disastrous for a devoted temporary assistant like me. It turned out that I had worried too much. Generally they read the materials they compiled beforehand, listened to my follow-up questions and brief comments, and shot up some intriguing even confrontational responses subsequently. Towards the end of the session, it was evident that their facial muscles were completely relaxed; body no longer stiffened; and their countenances read content.
On my way back, I was mired in a surge of fatigue. Nonetheless, how I wish that I had been able to attend courses like this back in my freshman year. As schonne pointed out: “Optima dies, prima fugit.”
